2014: The Year in Photos

Each year seems to come and disappear in a blink of an eye. Looking back it was hard to remember what made this year unique from another. That is until we looked at our photographs. All of a sudden things became more clear. 2014 was the year of nature. Our discoveries, our successes and our challenges were all found outside; whether it was in the vineyard, from the weather or from exploring the more wild corners of the farm.

2014. What a year for weather! Some of the strangest we've ever seen. The year came in with an ice storm and is going out with a very mild December. While the summer wasn't particularly hot, it was drier than several of the past years. All elements we lending themselves to many insecurities for the coming harvest. But as is the way with nature, it is always surprising. We had beautiful ripeness, retaining freshness and flavour. We thought we would pick very late this year, but in fact for some varieties we have never picked earlier than we did this year.

2014 was a year of experimentation. Both in the vineyard and in the winery. Memorable moments came from riddling and disgorging our sparkling ourselves or trying our very own vineyard blend for the first time (check out our Gamay/Pinot blend at the winery this summer). Experiments out in the vineyard are helping us learn what it takes to grow truly great grapes in Prince Edward County, and to better understand our own vineyard and what makes each block unique.

From flower to veraison, we studied the yearly cycle of the vine in close detail, picking up the difference in ripening time for different blocks, even different rows, in our own vineyards in a way we haven't seen before...

Harvest is the culmination of everything that we work for over the year. And this years is one to remember. We hard to work twice as hard for every grape this season, but the result on vintages such as this are wines that are dynamic, lean and very expressive without being overpowering. Most of our favourite wines we've produced have come from vintages similar to this, like 2009 and 2011.
